Bearclaw Spruces
is very difficult to photograph in a way that shows its splendor.

Sitka Spruce
This is perhaps
the best known and most widely used top wood. Sitka grows in the United
States and is often available in the "Bearclaw" variety.
Bearclaw is a natural aberration that many people find very striking to
view, yet it has no impact upon the tone of the instrument. Sitka imparts
a loud, woody sound. It provides a well balanced tone and can stand hard
playing without overdriving. It is the choice of many bluegrass players
and well as others who play in a group setting.
